Copper peptide side effects: what to expect
Copper peptides are generally well tolerated and are not associated with the dryness, flaking or stinging that often comes with starting retinol. The most common reports are mild and short lived: slight tingling on application, or irritation when too much is used too soon. Patch test first, as with any new product.
What do people actually report?
Mild tingling as a serum absorbs, which usually settles within a few uses.
Occasional irritation when someone starts daily use straight away rather than building up, or layers a copper peptide onto skin already sensitised by an exfoliating acid.
Nothing here is unique to copper peptides. It is the ordinary pattern of introducing any new active too quickly.
Do copper peptides turn skin blue?
No. The serum itself is blue in the bottle, and that colour comes from the copper rather than from dye, which is a fair reason to wonder. It does not tint skin at the concentrations used in cosmetics.
If a formula did leave a visible cast, that would be a formulation problem, not a property of the ingredient.
Who should be more careful?
Anyone with very reactive skin, or currently using a prescribed topical, should patch test on the inner forearm for a few days before putting a new product on the face.
If you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or under the care of a dermatologist, ask them before adding anything new. That is not a copper peptide specific warning. It is simply the sensible order to do things in.
How do you reduce the chance of irritation?
Start every other evening for the first fortnight, then move to daily once you know how your skin responds.
Introduce one new product at a time. If you start three at once and something stings, you have no way of knowing which one to drop.
Our formulas are paraben and sulphate free, cruelty free, and dermatologically tested, and every batch is quality checked before it leaves us.
Common questions
Can you use copper peptides every day?
Most people do, once their skin is used to them. Starting every other evening for the first two weeks and building up is the gentler way in, and consistency over weeks matters far more than frequency in any one week.
Do copper peptides cause purging?
Purging is associated with ingredients that speed up cell turnover, such as retinoids and acids. Copper peptides are not in that category, so a breakout after starting one is more likely an ordinary reaction to a new product than a purge.
Can you use copper peptides with retinol?
Many people alternate them on different evenings rather than layering. That keeps the routine gentle and means you can tell which product is doing what.
