Copper peptides and retinol: how they differ

Retinol is a vitamin A derivative that speeds the appearance of surface renewal and is well known for causing dryness and flaking while skin adjusts. Copper peptides take a gentler approach, supporting the look of firmness without that adjustment period. Many people use both, at different times of day.

The practical difference

Retinol is the more aggressive of the two. It is effective and it is also the reason a lot of people abandon a routine, because the first few weeks often involve dryness, flaking and sensitivity.

Copper peptides do not usually require that adjustment period. For anyone who has tried retinol and stopped, that is the whole argument.

Can you use both

Many people do. The usual approach is to separate them, retinol on some evenings and copper peptides on others, or retinol at night and copper peptides in the morning.

Using both in the same application is not generally recommended, mostly because it makes it impossible to tell which one your skin is reacting to.

Which to start with

If your skin is sensitive, or you have tried retinol and disliked the adjustment, start with copper peptides.

If you are already using retinol happily, there is no reason to stop. Adding a copper peptide serum on the alternate evenings is the common route.

What neither will do

Neither is a medicine. Both work on the appearance of skin, and both need weeks rather than days. Any product described as producing a specific percentage improvement in a stated timeframe is making a claim a cosmetic cannot support.

Common questions

Is copper peptide gentler than retinol?

Generally yes. Copper peptides do not typically cause the dryness and flaking associated with starting retinol, which is why they suit sensitive skin and anyone who has abandoned retinol before.

Can I use copper peptides and retinol on the same night?

Most people separate them, on alternate evenings or at different times of day. It also makes it far easier to tell which product your skin is responding to.

Which works faster?

Retinol tends to show surface change sooner, along with the adjustment period. Both should be given 4 to 8 weeks before judging.
